What Is a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that prepares patients for receiving dental implants in the upper arch. When tooth loss occurs in the top jaw, the hollow spaces in the maxillary bones on either side of the nose (maxillary sinuses) begin to expand. This process eventually depletes bone tissue in the upper jaw and occupies the space where tooth roots once existed. The result is insufficient bone support, and without healthy bone tissue, dental implants can't be placed. At ACE Dental of Bellmead, our seasoned team offers sinus lift surgery to restore bone loss for optimal support and function of dental implants. This procedure elevates the floor of the sinus cavity and inserts a bone graft to repair the jawbone. If you have lost an upper molar or premolar, we invite you to contact our Bellmead, TX office to schedule a consultation to see if you are a good candidate for a sinus lift.
Is a Sinus Lift Right for You?
Men and women who have lost one or more teeth in their upper jaw are typically good candidates for sinus augmentation. It is especially recommended if the sinus cavities have grown too large, the sinus floor has sunk too low, or there is insufficient bone mass for the support of dental implants. During your consultation, we will capture digital images of your oral structures with our advanced 3D cone beam system and discuss whether a sinus lift is necessary.
What Is the Treatment Process?
A sinus lift is considered an outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthetic at our office in Bellmead, TX. Sedation dentistry may also be incorporated to help keep you calm and comfortable throughout your procedure. Once you are prepped, an incision will be created within the gums where your back teeth once existed. The tissue will then be gently lifted to reveal the jawbone so we can access the sinus cavity. The sinus floor with then be carefully raised and a bone graft will be inserted to rebuild bone loss. Lastly, sutures will be placed to close the incision, and you will be free to go home.
Recovery Following Sinus Augmentation
Before you leave our office, we will provide you with post-op instructions to follow at home and may also write you a prescription for pain medication to help keep you more comfortable during your initial recovery. Typically, we'll schedule a follow-up visit 1 – 2 weeks after your surgery to check on your progress. It's also important to have realistic expectations and understand that a bone graft can take several months to heal. Once the bone graft has fused properly to the jawbone and the gums have healed, we will schedule your appointment to place your dental implants. In the meantime, following good oral hygiene habits and keeping up with routine dental exams are essential to maintaining the health of your teeth and gums.
