How Long Does it Take to Fill a Cavity?
Generally, it takes around an hour or so to fill a cavity. It depends on the extent of decay, number of fillings needed, and other factors. Different types of filling materials will have varying procedure times.
- A composite resin material is layered into your tooth. It may require more time, but you will only need a single visit.
- If your composite filling is prepared from an impression, a second visit to bond the impression will be required.
- If you are opting for a gold or porcelain filling, it will take one sitting if the dental office has the necessary equipment. You may have to make multiple visits otherwise.
Fillings take the same amount of time for children as they do for adults, but they might require extra time if the dentist gives the anesthesia. Therefore, it is possible that the children may require more recovery time as well.
The Filling Procedure
After that, the dentist removes the decay from your tooth using a drill or laser. They will shape the area and might etch the tooth with an acid gel. Then, the dentist applies actual filling material to your tooth and hardens it if need be. They use a special light to harden the filling material!
Lastly, they will polish the filling and adjust it according to your bite. Make sure to tell the dentist if your filling hurts or has sharp edges that push into your tongue or cheek.
How Long Does a Filling Take to Heal
Normally fillings heal normally, without any complications. You may experience a little sensitivity in your tooth after the filling wears off, but it goes away in two to four weeks.Your dentist might provide you with some aftercare instructions, including things to avoid after a filling — do not compromise on that!
If you have a sensitive tooth after filling, chew on the other side of your mouth for a few days. Be gentle while brushing or flossing, avoid acidic, cold, and hot foods, and ask your dentist for recommendations for OTC medications.

Final Note
If you are up for a dental filling procedure, it will last around an hour or so. Sometimes, you may need to visit the dental office more than once, depending on the filling material.
