Can You Drive After a Root Canal?
Root canals are common, but you might not be ready to drive right after your appointment. Even though the procedure is routine, your mouth may feel numb or sore, and you could feel a bit tired or stressed.
Many people want to get back to their day, but safe driving requires careful consideration. It’s important to listen to your body and take a few minutes to assess how you feel.
In this blog, we’ll discuss in detail whether you can drive right after your root canal treatment and what you should keep in mind.

What Happens During a Root Canal?
During the procedure, your dentist works inside the tooth to remove infected tissue, then cleans and seals the space.
Since local anesthesia is standard, you are awake and aware the whole time. It is common to leave the office feeling fine after a root canal treatment, except for some temporary numbness. For most patients, that numbness alone is not a reason to avoid driving.
Is It Safe to Drive After a Root Canal With Local Anesthesia?
If your dentist uses only local anesthesia for the root canal, you’ll likely be able to drive home afterward. Local anesthetic does not affect your senses or coordination. Only your lips, tongue, and cheek may feel numb temporarily.
However, the numbness may feel unusual and can be distracting. If you feel uncertain, take a few minutes to adjust before driving. There is no need to rush.
It’s rare to feel pain right after a root canal. If you do feel any discomfort, it usually starts once the numbness goes away.
When Driving After a Root Canal Is Not a Good Idea
Avoid driving if you have received any form of sedation. These medications, whether oral or intravenous, remain in your system and may impair your reflexes and alertness longer than anticipated, even if you feel well when leaving the clinic.
In these cases, arrange for a trusted person to drive you home. Dentists emphasize this guideline to prevent risks to your safety and that of others.
Certain pain medications can impair concentration. If you are prescribed medication stronger than standard pain relievers, wait to assess its effects before driving.
How You Might Feel After the Procedure
After your treatment, you might feel some soreness or pressure around the tooth for a few hours. Your jaw could also feel a little tight.
This level of discomfort usually does not affect your ability to drive, but pay attention to how you feel. We suggest resting instead of driving if you feel dizzy or tired. These reactions are uncommon, but they mean your body needs more time to heal before you drive again.
