Causes of Brown Stains on Teeth
There are many reasons why you have brown stains on your teeth, and you should visit a dentist to determine the cause. Once they have examined your teeth, the dentist will proceed with adequate treatments. Here are some causes of brown stains on teeth:
- Foods and Beverages: What you eat and drink also affects the appearance of your teeth. Some foods and beverages that stain your teeth include coffee, tea, red wine, cola, blueberries, blackberries, and more.
- Tooth Decay: One of the common factors behind most dental health issues is tooth decay. When the sugars in your food react with the bacteria in your mouth, acid forms and starts breaking down your tooth enamel. If you do not keep up with proper oral care, this can lead to brown stains and cavities.
- Tartar: If plaque manages to remain on your teeth, it hardens and turns into tartar. It might be yellow to brown and usually appears along the gum line.
- Fluorosis: Though fluoride is good for your teeth, it can lead to fluorosis. Generally, fluorosis is common in children when their teeth are developing. Mild fluorosis looks like white, lacy markings, whereas the severe form turns enamel pitted. You may notice brown stains on your teeth due to severe fluorosis.
- Trauma: You may have a brown or discolored spot on your teeth due to trauma. That is right – trauma can damage the tooth’s nerve, turning it brown or forming brown spots.
- Aging: It is normal for teeth to darken or develop spots as you age. A number of factors are responsible for this, including thinning enamel, surface stains, etc.
Treatment for Brown Spots on Teeth
The dentist will treat brown spots on teeth depending on the cause.
You may require professional teeth whitening to brighten up your smile and lift the color of your teeth. You can ask your dentist for at-home teeth whitening solutions as well. If you have stubborn stains, you may need dental veneers to cover up the discolored areas.
If you have tooth decay, you will require a proper dental procedure depending on the level of decay. You may require tooth fillings if it is severe. In some cases, teeth can become infected and will require a root canal. The sooner you receive treatment, the better!
Dental cleaning sessions also help keep your teeth free of tartar and prevent dental health issues, such as tooth decay.
