4 Stages of Bone Graft Healing
Bone graft recovery could be as fast as two weeks, or it could last a year. Generally, people can resume their normal routine a couple of weeks following the bone graft surgery, but it takes 3 to 6 months for it to fully recover. Here is what you can expect in the dental bone graft healing stages:
- Day 1 to 7
During your initial recovery period, you will deal with swelling, pain, bleeding, etc. It is the period right after your surgery, and you will have to be careful with your diet and even control your oral hygiene. Brushing the surgical site could aggravate it and cause complications, so it is better to rinse your mouth as instructed by your dentist. - Week 2 to 6
As you enter the second week of bone graft healing, you will notice improvements. The bone graft material is still integrating with your natural bone during this time, and you can expect reduced swelling. Moreover, you can switch to a soft food diet, initiate oral hygiene, and maintain follow-up appointments with your dental specialist. - Month 2 to 6
Between 2 and 6 months, the dental bone graft material will mature and solidify, and it is called the maturation stage. The natural bone becomes stronger, and you can resume normal oral functions such as chewing and biting habits. Oral hygiene and regular visits are important during this dental bone graft healing stage as well! - 6+ Months
From the sixth month onwards, the dental bone graft will completely heal if it is not already. It might take several months and even years for it to completely heal from the surgery.
What Affects Dental Bone Graft Healing?
Dental bone graft healing generally occurs in four stages, and the time varies for each individual. Some factors that might affect the recovery include smoking, tobacco consumption, medical conditions, nutrition, infection, medications, and more. You should follow your dental specialist’s instructions to ensure a safe and quick recovery.
